Breast Lift vs. Breast Enhancement: Which is For Me?

Breast Augmentation Breast Reduction Body Breast Breast Enhancement Breast Implant Exchange Breast Lift

Have you been wanting to change breasts? It can be exciting to contemplate the fuller, rounder breasts that you can achieve through breast augmentation, especially when yours have changed over time. Sometimes you lose breast volume after pregnancy or breastfeeding, or you notice that gravity is taking over. And sometimes you are ready to have the larger, shapelier breasts you’ve always wanted. Whether you opt for a breast lift, a breast enhancement, or a combination of the two, both procedures can help you get the beautiful breasts you dream of. However, there are some differences that can help guide your decisions. Let's check out the options

What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, remedies sagging or sunken breasts by giving them a lift and raising them. A board certified plastic surgeon can remove excess skin and tighten the surrounding tissue to give the breasts a lifted, more youthful appearance.

Why Might You Consider a Breast Lift?

There are many reasons people pursue a breast lift, including:
  • They want to change how their breasts look to improve their self-image.
  • Their nipples fall below their breast crease when not wearing a bra.
  • Their areolas and nipples point downward.
  • Their breasts are uneven.

Again, these are common, normal concerns—all of which can be alleviated through this simple and safe procedure. Many people are surprised at how happy they are with the results and wish that they had done something sooner!

What To Expect Before and After

When you receive a breast surgery with Dr. Fischer, you can expect the “breast lift before and after,” to align with your initially discussed goals. You’ll reduce sagging, regain that characteristic round shape, and enjoy a more uniform look for both breasts.

When you compare the “breast implant before and after” photos, the largest difference you will likely notice is that your breast(s) will be larger at that “perfect to you” size you discussed with your plastic surgeon prior to surgery.

What Is the Procedure and Recovery Process?

When it comes to breast lifts and breast enhancements, the overall process for both is typically similar. When receiving a breast procedure with Dr. Beverly Fischer, you will meet with her and the Advanced Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS) team for a consultation. Here, you’ll ensure that you’re cleared to receive a procedure. As long as you have maintained a steady and healthy weight and are a non-smoker, you can safely have the surgeries. To receive a breast enhancement, it’s important that you’re of an age that your breasts are fully developed and that you are not actively pregnant or breastfeeding. If you meet these stipulations, Dr. Fischer will work with you to map out the best steps for you to achieve your dream breasts.

About three weeks prior to your surgery, you will visit the ACPS office for a pre-operative appointment to sign all necessary forms and get your before photos taken. On the day of surgery, you’ll receive general anesthesia, and you will be in surgery for one to four hours. Dr. Fischer will make specific incisions, dependent upon your consultation discussion.

Some patients choose to receive solely a breast lift or breast enhancement, while others pair the two together. This decision determines what steps occur during your procedure—they may include inserting a saline or silicone implant, reshaping your breast tissue, repositioning your areola, and/or removing excess breast tissue. After your procedure, Dr. Fischer will provide you with special bandages and a compression garment and administer medication to reduce the pain.

For optimal recovery, it’s important to keep your breasts supported. You might need to wear a support bra or elastic bandages to hold your breasts in place to ensure they heal correctly.
