The neck is a problem area for so many of our patients. It’s one of the first areas that can show signs of aging, including sagging skin and fine lines and wrinkles. Luckily, with a neck lift and Dr. Fischer’s expertise, you can turn back the clock and look years younger with treatment at our Baltimore, MD office.
What is a Neck Lift?
Also called a lower rhytidectomy, a neck lift is a procedure where excess skin and tissue are removed from the neck or jawline to create a younger, tighter contour.
If you’ve been wanting to change the look of your neck or have recently noticed sagging skin, neck bands, or loose skin, this procedure is likely the one you’re looking for.
Candidates for a Neck Lift
Whether it’s due to heredity, environmental factors, weight gain, stress, or plain old gravity, a neck lift can help with serious neck wrinkling and sagging (aka neck bands or turkey neck) and even a double chin. If you’re struggling with any of these concerns, you are likely a good candidate for a neck lift. We also recommend ideal candidates for a neck lift be in overall good health, have realistic expectations, be nonsmokers, and not have any medical conditions that could affect the healing process.
Neck Lift Procedure
When you come in for your neck lift procedure, we’ll take your before photos, and then Dr. Fischer will come to mark up the area according to your goals and her plan for you that day. You will then walk back to the surgical suite, and our team will get you prepped for surgery by connecting you to the monitors and inserting your IV.
Then, we will administer either local or general anesthesia. If you choose general anesthesia, you will meet with our anesthesiologist. If you choose local anesthesia, you will first take a gentle sedative (Valium) an hour before surgery to calm and relax you before walking back to the onsite operating room.
Dr. Fischer will perform the neck lift procedure within 1-2 hours. She’ll start by making an incision along your hairline and around your ears. From there, she’ll reposition and remodel your underlying tissue and tighten the tissue and muscles. Dr. Fischer will then remove any excess skin and fat. She will finish up by closing your incisions, and you’ll be ready to start your recovery.
You’ll be able to go home the same day, but you will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from the practice and take care of you for the first 48-72 hours.
Neck Lift Recovery
First 24 hours
You will go home wearing a large dressing around your neck area. You may also have drains to catch any fluid buildup. Both of these will be removed the next morning after your surgery date. Any discomfort can be treated with prescription medication provided at your pre-op appointment.
Week 1
At this stage, your dressing will be replaced with a much more comfortable compression garment that can be removed when you take a shower. Besides showering, you’ll want to wear your compression garment 24/7 for the first week. After three days of recovery, you’ll likely start to feel more like yourself. Swelling and bruising will begin to diminish after about a week. Make sure to follow all of Dr. Fischer’s post-op instructions on how much activity you can perform. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 1-2 weeks.
Week 2
After two weeks of recovery, your sutures will be removed, and you’ll be able to wear your compression garment only at night. After a month or more, you will likely be able to resume most of your normal routine, including more strenuous activity.
Neck Lift Results
You may notice some initial results right after surgery, but swelling and bruising will hide most of the improvements. It will take a few months before you see your final results. To maintain your results, we can discuss further skin treatments, but you can start with regular sunscreen application and a healthy diet and exercise regimen.
