If you’re a man struggling with enlarged breasts and are ready to finally stop feeling embarrassed when you’re not wearing a shirt, gynecomastia surgery may be just the treatment option you’ve been searching for. Dr. Fischer at The Advanced Center for Plastic Surgery in Baltimore can help you feel more at home in your body again.
What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is swelling of the breast tissue in boys or men and is typically caused by a hormone imbalance. The condition can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly. Men may develop gynecomastia as a result of normal changes in hormone levels, though other causes also exist, like certain medical conditions and medications.
Generally, gynecomastia isn’t a serious problem and may go away on its own, but it can be challenging to cope with the condition, and the effect is not guaranteed to disappear, which is why Dr. Beverly Fischer has performed and perfected two types of procedures to treat it: liposuction and mastectomy.
Liposuction removes any excess fatty tissue in the breast area, while a mastectomy removes the breast gland tissue.
Candidates for Gynecomastia
If you are a man struggling with gynecomastia in or around Baltimore, you are likely a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery. That said, there are some criteria we look for when determining if a patient is a good candidate for this life-changing procedure, including the following:
- In generally good health
- Has realistic expectations
- Don’t have any medical conditions that could negatively affect the healing process
- Nonsmokers
- At a stable weight
- Men who are bothered by the feeling that their breasts are too large
Gynecomastia Procedure
What occurs during your gynecomastia procedure depends on the cause of your gynecomastia and the results you’re looking for. To remove fatty tissue in the breast area, we use liposuction to loosen and remove the fat with suction.
To remove the actual breast gland tissue, Dr. Fischer will perform a mastectomy where we excise the breast gland tissue completely.
No matter which type of procedure is gone, the surgery will start with the administration of general anesthesia. In total, gynecomastia surgery takes about an hour.
Gynecomastia Recovery
After your surgery, we’ll make you comfortable with supportive bandages and a special compression garment designed to help you heal faster. Prescription medication can treat any discomfort.
You can go home the same day of your surgery, but you will need someone to take you to and from our office and to watch you for the first 24-48 hours. You’ll also need to come into the office the next day so we can ensure everything is healing properly.
For the first week of recovery, you’ll want to rest and avoid any strenuous activities. Wear your compression garment 24/7 and take care of your drains as directed. You’ll also need to limit the range of motion in your arms.
Once you are two weeks into your recovery, your drains will be removed, and you will finally be able to take a shower. You’ll still want to keep your incisions clean and continue to wear your compression garment. At this point, you’ll also be able to see more of the results, as the swelling is likely almost gone.
By week 4, you will likely be able to return to your normal activity level and fully enjoy your new body.
Gynecomastia Results
While you will likely notice some results immediately after your gynecomastia surgery, your full results will be hidden due to the swelling and bruising. You can expect to see your final results 3-6 months after surgery.
