If you’re struggling with volume loss in the face or any other areas of the body, fat transfer is likely a perfect treatment option. By removing fat from one area and injecting it into another, our team at The Advanced Center for Plastic Surgery can help you achieve your body goals without needing a more invasive procedure.
What is Fat Transfer?
Fat transfer is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure where we take unwanted fat from one area and inject it into another area where you want it. Fat is often taken from the thighs, stomach, and hips and can be injected into the lips, face, under the eyes, or cheeks.
Candidate for Fat Transfer
You’re a good candidate for fat transfer if you:
- Are close to your ideal weight
- Are in good overall health
- Don’t smoke or can quit smoking a few weeks before and after the procedure
- Have enough fat on your body to donate
- Have realistic expectations
Fat Transfer Procedure
Before fat transfer surgery, we will administer local anesthesia to the donor area to ensure you’re entirely comfortable. From there, Dr. Fischer will then make an incision in the donor area and insert a thin tube (called a cannula) to loosen up the fat, and then the fat will be suctioned out via a vacuum.
The fat will then be spun down, placed in a syringe, and injected into the desired area.
The procedure’s length depends on the amount of fat transferred and where it’s transferred. It can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours.
Fat Transfer Recovery & Results
After fat transfer surgery, it’s common to experience side effects in both the donor area and treatment area. These side effects may include bruising, swelling, and some discomfort. For the buttocks, stomach, and hips, you’ll need to wear a compression garment to help ease the swelling and aid in healing.
How long it takes to recover depends on the location of the fat transfer. Most of the side effects will diminish over several weeks. You can typically return to work after about a week, but some patients need two or more weeks.
During your consultation and follow-up appointments, Dr. Fischer can provide more specifics about when you can return to work and more strenuous activities.
The fat cells taken from the donor area will not return, but if you gain weight, the fat cells in the surrounding area can grow. Losing weight can also cause the fat in the treated area to diminish.
