What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that improves your body’s appearance by removing fat deposits in specific treatment areas. While it is not an alternative to diet and exercise and does not produce dramatic weight loss, it does remove pockets of fat that don’t respond to those methods. It often accompanies other procedures, such as a tummy tuck.

Candidate for Liposuction
Most patients who come into our Baltimore office looking to remove excess fat are good candidates for liposuction. Some of the criteria Dr. Fischer looks for in ideal candidates for liposuction include:
- Have stubborn fat on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, chin, or other areas that haven’t responded to diet and exercise
- Are in generally good health
- Have realistic expectations of the results
- Are committed to a healthy lifestyle
- Are close to your goal weight
Liposuction Procedure
To start your liposuction procedure in Baltimore, we’ll first take “before” pictures, and you’ll meet with our anesthesiologist, who will explain their process and plan. You’ll be given general anesthesia to ensure you’re completely comfortable throughout the procedure.
Dr. Fischer will perform the liposuction procedure. She’ll make an incision in the treatment area and insert a diluted numbing solution. From there, she’ll insert a cannula tube to loosen and remove the excess fatty tissue. The fat will be suctioned out via a vacuum. Once all the excess fat is removed, Dr. Fischer will close the incision, and you’ll be ready to start your recovery journey.
Liposuction Recovery
After your surgery, we’ll make you comfortable with a compression garment designed to help you heal faster. You’ll be able to go home that day, although you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home. Any discomfort can be treated with prescription medication. You will see swelling, bruising, and discomfort, but these side effects will diminish as you heal.
Within the first two weeks, you will want to get plenty of rest and keep your incisions clean. As long as you’re healing properly, you can return to work and start performing light activities like walking.
You should continue wearing your compression garment for several weeks to help ease healing and support the treatment area.
At 1-2 months after your liposuction surgery, you will be able to see your initial results as the swelling goes down. At this point, you can resume most of your normal routine. Full results will become visible after six months or more of recovery.
Liposuction Results
The swelling will likely take several months to fully dissipate. As it does, your new contours will develop, and your confidence will shine.
If you maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine, your liposuction results can be permanent. If you do gain weight, the fat cells will not return, but the fat cells in the surrounding areas can expand.
