Not many cosmetic procedures are as life-changing as breast reduction. It doesn’t just make your breasts smaller but also provides relief from pain, skin irritation, and self-consciousness. Your new smaller breasts can even make it easier to exercise. Fully transform your life with the help of Dr. Fischer and our team at The Advanced Center for Plastic Surgery in Baltimore.
What is Breast Reduction?
If your breasts are more of a burden than a confidence boost, a breast reduction is likely the perfect solution for you. A breast reduction, also known as reduction mammaplasty, allows you to remove excess breast tissue and skin and finally have a life free of back, neck, and shoulder pain and self-consciousness.
As one of the top female cosmetic surgeons in the area, Dr. Beverly Fischer is an expert in reduction mammaplasty. She loves seeing her patients cry tears of joy when they finally fall in love with this part of their body again.
Candidates for Breast Reduction
If you’re experiencing back, shoulder, or neck pain due to the size and weight of your breasts, you are likely a good candidate for this life-changing procedure. Some other criteria we look for in ideal candidates for breast reduction include:
- Being in generally good health
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding
- Having realistic expectations
- Have asymmetrical breasts
- Struggling with physical activity due to the size of your breasts
- Dealing with shoulder indentations caused by bra straps
- Skin irritation in your breast crease and/or have skin irritation beneath the breast crease
- No medical conditions that could negatively affect the healing process
- Nonsmokers
Breast Reduction Procedure
For a breast reduction, we’ll take your before photos, and administer general anesthesia, and Dr. Fischer will perform a two-hour surgery employing leading-edge technology created just for this procedure.
The type of incision used depends on the results you’re looking for and the amount of skin being removed, but the options are the anchor or lollipop incision. Dr. Fischer will also reshape your breast and place your nipple and areola in an appropriate position. All breast reductions also include a breast lift to ensure the proper positioning of your breasts.
Breast Reduction Recovery
After your breast reduction procedure, we’ll make you comfortable with supportive bandages and a special compression sports bra designed to help you heal faster and support your new breast shape and size. Any discomfort can be treated with prescription medication. You’ll also want to make sure you’re getting enough rest and keeping ice on your breasts for the first 48-72 hours after surgery.
After about a week of recovery, you can return to work and resume some lighter activities. You’ll continue to wear the surgical bra to help minimize swelling. We also recommend silicon sheets to help reduce the visibility of scars. You’ll want to avoid strenuous activity for the first 2-3 weeks.
After six weeks, you can return to regular exercise and activities. Scarring should continue to fade and recede after a year.
Breast Reduction Results
You can expect to see some results right after surgery, but it will take 3-6 weeks to see your full results as the swelling subsides and your new breasts settle. While breast reduction won’t stop the aging process, the results are long-lasting.
As you heal, you’ll also notice relief from back, shoulder, and neck pain and no more shoulder indentations or skin irritation.
