What is PRP Hair Restoration?

Platelet-rich plasma hair restoration (PRP hair restoration) is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a patient’s own plasma to stimulate hair growth. The PRP is injected into the scalp or anywhere on the body, and at the Advanced Center for Plastic Surgery, we also use microneedling to ensure the formula deeply penetrates into the scalp. The PRP includes growth factors that can stimulate the hair follicles. This helps to kick-start the hair growth process, resulting in fuller hair where it is needed.

Candidates for PRP Hair Restoration

Anyone struggling with hair loss or thinning hair is a good candidate for PRP hair restoration. We follow certain criteria when determining if this treatment is right for a specific patient. The criteria may include:

• Adults over the age of 18
• Being in good overall health
• Having realistic expectations of treatment
• Not pregnant or breastfeeding

PRP Hair Restoration Treatment

The treatment will start with numbing the area that is to be treated. After that, your skilled provider will draw a portion of your own blood. The blood is then spun down in one of our machines in order to separate your blood into a platelet-rich plasma. While you are numb, the PRP will then be carefully injected into the scalp. Our microneedling device is then used to further push the PRP into the hair follicles and deeper tissues.

You may see noticeable results after your first session, but most patients need at least 3, and up to 6 treatments.

PRP Hair Restoration Recovery & Results

After your PRP hair restoration treatment, you will be able to go back to your normal routine with minimal downtime. You may experience some swelling, bruising, and mild tenderness for the first 48-72 hours. You will want to avoid certain medications like NSAIDs (Advil, Motrin, Aleve, etc) during this time as they may interfere with the healing process. You will also want to avoid washing your hair or putting excess pressure on your scalp for 24 hours. Your provider will go over all of the aftercare with you.

As for results, it typically takes a few weeks to months before you start to see changes. You should continue to see results over the next 6-12 months.
