Many people struggle with sagging skin and deep wrinkles as they age, and while we can’t turn back time, we can make you look as young as you feel with a facelift procedure. By tightening the facial muscles, removing excess skin, and lifting the skin, we can rejuvenate and smooth your appearance and allow you to put your best face forward.
What is a Facelift?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that can take years off your appearance by making several small changes to your face. During the procedure, Dr. Beverly Fischer will tighten the skin of the face, remove excess tissue, and tighten the facial muscles.
The incisions are placed in inconspicuous places to ensure any scars are practically invisible.
We also offer a number of different types of facelifts in Baltimore, ensuring we meet all your needs. The types of facelifts we offer at The Advanced Center for Plastic Surgery include: the mini facelift, full facelift, and our Elevate facelift that can be done under local PO sedation. During your consultation with Dr. Fischer, she’ll help you determine the right one for you.
Candidates for a Facelift
If you’ve been subject to the effects of gravity, the sun, or simply living life over the years, you may notice your face sagging and making you look older than you are. Your skin loses its elasticity, so you may also have excess skin, causing jowls and dropped cheeks. Wrinkles and other creases become more prominent, too.
If you’re unhappy with your appearance, a facelift is a sensible and easy way to address these changes. If you decide you’re not ready for a facelift yet, we offer many other options to refresh and reboot your look.
Generally, we treat patients who are seeking a more youthful appearance. Our typical patient is 50+, but we are happy to work with anyone who wants to achieve a younger look.
We also recommend patients be generally healthy, have realistic expectations, and don’t have any medical conditions that could affect the healing process.
Facelift Procedure
For our facelift procedure in Baltimore, we’ll take your before photos, and then Dr. Fischer will mark up the area according to your goals and her plan for that day. You will then walk back to the surgical suite, and our team will prep you for surgery by connecting you to the monitors and inserting your IV.
Then, we will administer either local or general anesthesia. If you choose general anesthesia, you will meet with our anesthesia provider, who will explain their process and plan. If you choose local anesthesia, you will first take a gentle sedative (Valium) an hour before surgery to calm and relax you before walking back to the onsite operating room.
Dr. Fischer will perform the facelift procedure using cutting-edge technology and a perfected technique. You’ll be able to go home that day, but you will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from our office. We also recommend having a family or friend around to assist for the first three days after surgery. Any discomfort can be treated with prescription medication provided at your pre-op appointment or over-the-counter medication.
Facelift Recovery
First 24 hours
You will go home wearing a large head dressing and will have two drains placed near your incisions to catch any excess fluid that builds up. Both drains will be removed the morning after your surgery.
Week 1
Your head dressing will be replaced with a much more comfortable compression garment you can remove when you shower. You will wear this 24/7 for the entire first week.
You’ll be feeling more comfortable after about three days, and most swelling and bruising will have subsided by seven days. Make sure you’re getting enough rest and avoiding strenuous activity for the first one to two weeks.
Week 2
At this point, the sutures will be removed, and you will only wear your compression garment at night.
You can resume your normal routine after the second week, including more strenuous activity. At this stage, we can also discuss any other enhancement nonsurgical treatments to keep your skin looking its best.
Facelift Results
While most people will be comfortable going out in public after about 10-14 days or less, it can take up to 2-3 months for the full results to show up as swelling and bruising diminish and for you to feel like your face is back to its normal state.
To maintain your results, you’ll want to wear sunscreen regularly and practice a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise.
