Liposuction Back to Blog
If you’re thinking about getting liposuction from The Advanced Center for Plastic Surgery, you’re making a great decision. Liposuction is a great way to remove pesky belly fat that won’t dissipate with diet and exercise, and can really boost your self-esteem.
But despite the fact that it’s the most widely-performed plastic surgery procedure in the US – with over 414,000 procedures performed in 2016 alone – you might still be a bit nervous about getting liposuction.
And that’s okay! We understand completely. That’s why we’ve put together this quick post to help you feel more comfortable about getting liposuction, and to dispel some common myths about the procedure.
Myth 1 – Recovery Takes A Long Time
Liposuction is very safe and common, but it is still a surgical procedure, and does require a recovery period. However, recovery times from liposuction are usually quite short. Some pain and bruising is usually common for about 1-2 weeks.
In addition, patients may experience mild tenderness in treated areas for up to several months. However, all major side effects and symptoms are typically resolved by about 3 weeks.

Usually, about one full week is required before you can resume work, and exercise should be discontinued for about 2-3 weeks. After this time, your surgeon will usually clear you to resume your normal, day-to-day activities.
Myth 2 – Complications Are Common In Liposuction
Almost all liposuction procedures are performed with absolutely no complications, and death or serious complications from liposuction are incredibly rare. The rate of mortality for liposuction is about 19 in 100,000 cases, making it extremely uncommon.

As a surgical procedure, liposuction is incredibly safe. While there is a chance that issues like excess bleeding, fluid buildup or other complications may occur, proper surgical technique will reduce the risk of these issues to nearly zero!
Of course, there are some medical conditions which can prevent your surgery. Heart conditions, diabetes and obesity may preclude you from getting treatment. We recommend consulting Dr. Beverly Fischer to ensure that you’re healthy enough for lipo.
Myth 3 – The Fat Will Come Back Later
This is one of the most common liposuction myths – and it’s simply not true. Liposuction physically removes fat cells from the body, and these fat cells will not recur – either in that area, or in any other area.
If you continue to gain weight after liposuction, fat will come back, and other areas of your body will “fill out” with fat, based on your genetic predisposition to weight gain. We recommend avoiding significant weight gain after liposuction with diet and exercise.

If you control your weight, fat will not recur at the site of your liposuction. That’s a total myth.
