Neck Lift: Reasons to Consider & What to Expect
By Beverly Fischer on August 29, 2019
Surgical Face and Neck Back to BlogAging is a process that affects the entire body, inside and out, but certain areas tend to show aging more quickly than others. We now know the damage the sun’s harmful UV rays can do to our skin, causing premature wrinkling, discoloration, and more. This is why many of us have switched to moisturizers and makeup products that include sunscreen.Unfortunately, we tend to focus on our faces at the expense of our necks, and the thin, delicate skin in this area suffers from exposure, resulting in wrinkles and sagging. In some cases, heredity is to blame for early wrinkling and sagging in the neck area, but even the way you sleep at night (for example, using two pillows instead of one) can contribute to early aging of the neck.
The good news is, you don’t have to let an aging neck destroy all the hard work you’ve done to preserve your youthful appearance. You can start with a product like SENTE Neck Firming Cream, but if you need more, a neck lift could be the best solution. Is it right for you? Here are a few things to consider.
Reasons for a Neck Lift Procedure
This cosmetic procedure is designed for patients with significant wrinkling and sagging in the neck and jowls, resulting in what is commonly referred to as a “turkey wattle.” All of us age differently, so while your face may remain relatively youthful, with minimal sagging and wrinkles, the skin of your neck could give you away and make you self-conscious.
If you’re not ready for a full facelift, and you’re not keen to wear turtlenecks or scarves every day, it’s time to consider a neck lift. This procedure is ideal for anyone who is unhappy with the advanced signs of aging exhibited in the neck area, especially if it doesn’t match the youthful appearance of the face.
What to Expect
A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, an incision will be made at the hairline near the ear, where it will remain hidden following recovery and healing. A neck lift can include tightening muscle tissue, performing liposuction (through a separate incision under the chin), repositioning skin and removing any excess, and then closing incisions to create a firmer, smoother, more contoured neck and jawline.
Next, the area will be bandaged and you may have a stent to help drain fluids and reduce swelling in the days following surgery. Symptoms like swelling, bruising, numbness, and tightness are normal, but you will receive a prescription to help you manage pain for the first few days. You should expect one or two weeks of downtime before you can return to normal activities, and three or more weeks before resuming more intense physical activities.
As swelling and bruising subside, you’ll see the incredible results of your neck lift procedure. This could take several weeks, or even months, depending on how your body heals. Within six months, you should see final results, including full healing of incisions.
