A beautiful smile is one of the first things people notice about others. If your lips are holding you back from your perfect smile, Dr. Fischer and the team at the Advanced Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS) are here to help! No set of lips is the same, and if you’ve found yourself wanting a fuller pout, you’re not alone. Maybe you once had full, lush lips but you’ve noticed they’re thinning with age. This is also incredibly common! Don’t let your lips hold you back or impact your confidence. Lip augmentation procedures are a simple solution to achieving your dream lips.

If you find yourself over-lining your lips or using “lip-plumping” glosses or techniques, you’re probably feeling frustrated at their short-term effects. The truth is, there are really no at-home solutions to maintaining a long-lasting, plump set of lips - steps involving a medical professional are required. Dr. Fischer has more than twenty years of experience in plastic surgery and even gives educational webinars on lip injections and lip implants. Learn how you can get and keep your dream lips with lip treatments at ACPS.

What Is a Lip Injection?

Lip injections may be just the solution to achieving your perfect set of lips. This non-surgical procedure is quick, simple, and relatively low on the pain threshold when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. First, a topical anesthetic is applied to the lips and, depending on your desired lip size, a needle may be used to inject small amounts of anesthetic inside of your mouth as well (in order to minimize pain). Once your mouth feels numb, the filler is then injected into various parts of your lips with a needle.

Is a Lip Injection Right for Me?

You may be wondering, “How long do fillers last?” or, “Are lip fillers painful?” or, “What size will my lips actually be?” These are all common questions that Dr. Fischer gets every week when patients are trying to decide if a lip injection is right for them.

  • Size matters. If you’re feeling nervous that your lips may be too large, or that you’ll spend time and money only to have no noticeable difference, rest-assured that Dr. Fischer will go into great detail about your preferred lip size and how to achieve it during your pre-surgical consultation.
  • Which filler you choose will determine how long its effects last. Most fillers will last between 4-6 months, making upkeep easy.
  • Thanks to anesthetics and Dr. Fischer’s experience, your lip injection treatment should be easy-breezy and almost painless. You should expect some swelling and minimal pain at the injection sites, but overall, this is a low-pain procedure with minimal downtime needed.

What Are the Different Types of Lip Injections?

Lip injections can be performed with your own body fat or by fillers. There are many different options to choose for your filler. During your pre-surgical consultation, Dr. Fischer will review each with you in more detail to determine which is right for you.

All fillers are hyaluronic acid-based. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body and helps provide hydration, fullness, and elasticity. While all fillers offered at ACPS are great options for your lip injection, there are subtle differences in each one.

What Is the Downtime After a Lip Injection?

When receiving lip augmentation treatments with hyaluronic acid fillers, there is little to no downtime needed. Procedures last less than an hour and side effects include minimal bleeding, swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness at the injection sites. Lip injections via body fat require some downtime, as you must undergo minimal amounts of liposuction. You should expect similar side effects on and around the lips as you would experience with other fillers, as well as tenderness and swelling in the area where you receive liposuction. If you have any concerns about lip treatments, Dr. Fischer and the ACPS team are happy to discuss them with you prior to your procedure.

How Often Do I Need to Get Touch-Ups After My First Lip Injection?

Results from lip injections vary depending on the filler chosen. It is recommended to get touch-ups performed about halfway through the predicted duration of an injection. For Restylane and Juvaderm injections, it’s recommended to get touch-ups about every 3 months. For Voluma injections, it’s recommended to get touch-ups about every 6 months. As we’ve said before, no two sets of lips are the same, so your touch-up schedule may differ from someone else with the same injection type, depending on how your body reacts to the filler and your desired size. Dr. Fischer and the ACPS team will work with you to customize a plan that ensures you continue to flaunt your dream lips!
