The Most Common Skin Concerns & How to Treat Them

Skincare Chemical Peels

Your skin is one of the first things people notice when they see you, so taking good care of it is important not only for your own health but for your confidence too. Here we’ll explore several of the top skin care ailments and concerns that plague us all, from acne to eczema, to scars, to wrinkles. Whether they’re on our face, arms, legs, back, chest, or other areas, these issues can all be helped with some easy non-surgical or surgical treatments.

1. Acne
Not surprisingly, acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), up to 50 million Americans battle the effects of acne each year. We normally associate the blistery pimples and the scarring they leave behind with teenagers since about 85 percent of people between 12-24 display some form of acne—but acne can pop up (sorry!) at any time, and continue into midlife. Its incidence is also on the rise, affecting up to fifteen percent of women.

The Fix: So how do we tackle this pervasive condition? Fortunately, there are several effective skin treatments for acne. First, it’s important to try to eradicate the acne at its source by reducing oil and any facial swelling—or by addressing a bacterial infection. A toner  like ZO Skin Health Complexion Renewal Pads, which was named in Cosmopolitan’s “2022 Holy Grail Clear Skin Awards” for removing surface oil and pore clogging debris with glycolic and salicylic acid is a smart choice. Products containing retinoids are also effective at quelling the inflammation. Antibiotics reduce the redness and inflammation and also kill bacteria.

If you are dealing with scars, you can try therapies like micro-needling to stimulate collagen for smoother skin, chemical peels that reveal a new layer of skin and also stimulate collagen, and the HaloTM laser treatment, which exfoliates the skin and stimulates collagen production as well.

2. Forehead Wrinkles
Ah, the omnipresent forehead wrinkles, which can make us look older (or madder) than we are! While the above-the-brow lines and the strident “11” between the eyes are frustrating signs of aging, they can thankfully be minimized.

The Fix: Some creams with retinol can help reduce these wrinkles while building epidermal thickness through collagen production. You can also use a vitamin C serum that helps fight free radical damage. Injectables are another great tool in waging the war against aging.

3. Scars
While scars can tell our life story, sometimes we don’t feel like reliving the pain of old injuries, skin ailments, or acne. Scars can often recede on their own as the skin heals—but that is not guaranteed. If you want to help the process along or ensure that it happens correctly, there are some steps you can take.

The Fix: Avoid the sun when you have a fresh scar since the UV rays can delay  or slow the healing process. You can use a laser treatment like the HaloTM laser treatment to gently minimize  bothersome scars. You can also try certain steroid injections for raised scars or injectable dermal fillers like Restylane or Juvéderm, which help smooth the sunken skin.
