How to Avoid Old-Looking Hands - Dr. Beverly Fischer

Most women are obsessed with perfecting their skin care routine and applying face and body lotions like there is no tomorrow. But while we are busy stocking up on face moisturizers, serums, and what not, most of the time we forget about the one body part that shows our age the fastest: our hands.

You see, just like Shakira’s hips, your hands don’t lie. Hand care is crucial if you want to delay the signs of aging, such as dry, cracked skin, brown spots, and bulging veins for as long as possible.

At the Advanced Center for Plastic Surgery, we leave no inch of skin uncovered and take care of everything, from your face and neck to your hands and feet. This article will discuss five tricks that you can put into action at home to prevent dehydration and avoid aging hands.

Wear Gloves

While moisturizers and treatments are crucial, protecting your hands from harmful factors is just as important. Hot water and dish soaps strip away natural oils and irritate your skin. Always use rubber gloves when doing household chores like washing the dishes or cleaning the countertops.

Moisturize

Similar to using harsh agents to do household chores, frequently washing your hands can also damage the skin. Use cream and lotions that lock in moisture and make your hands look younger than they are. Look for formulas that incorporate ingredients like vitamin A, E, shea butter, lavender, calendula, and macadamia oil. Apply the cream on damp skin to absorb moisture better and help calm the area. Use a moisturizer every time you wash your hands, take a shower, or just feel like your skin is getting dry.

Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen is not only meant for hot summer months. UV rays are harmful no matter the season and can lead to brown spots. Since your hands are your most exposed body part, protect them by using a moisturizer with high SPF even during winter. Your hands will thank you later.

Laser Resurfacing

If you are looking for a more permanent fix, laser resurfacing treatments may be the best option for you! At ACPS, we work with two lasers - Halo and Forever Young BBL.

Halo™ is a hybrid fractional laser resurfacing treatment that can be used to treat an incredible range of skin imperfections. It delivers both ablative and non-ablative wavelengths to the same microscopic treatment zone. In other words it works on the damage you can and can’t see.

Forever Young BBL is an innovative technology that uniquely delivers light therapy, targeting the signs of aging and sun damage and effectively provides a more refreshed, rejuvenated and youthful appearance. This revolutionary treatment sends light energy deep into the skin to boost your body's natural ability to fight aging.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a common injectable for women looking to reduce signs of aging. Fillers don’t require invasive surgical procedure prep or recovery. In fact, there is no recovery at all! During the treatment, the dermal filler is skillfully injected under the skin, plumping the target area and/or minimizing the appearance of wrinkles. Most fillers are HA, or hyaluronic acid fillers, which is a substance that occurs naturally in the body.

Nail Care

It’s not just the skin on your hands that shows off your age, but also your nails. Pamper them with periodic manicures, file, and buff to avoid harsh, stripy-looking nails. Avoid acetone nail polish remover, and treat your cuticles with rich cuticle oils on a regular basis.

Treat Your Hands from the Inside

Pampering and layering serums and lotions might help big time, but it is never enough if you do not treat the problem from the inside. Add lots of protein to your diet to help replenish collagen tissues. Eat eggs and dairy in moderation, but load up on vegetable proteins such as chickpeas, lentils, beans, mushrooms, nuts, and greens.

Hand care is imperative no matter the age, occupation, social status, gender, or even season. Update your hand care routine to avoid aging hands. Take good care of your skin from the inside out, keep a balanced diet, protect your hands from harsh factors like soaps, detergents, pollution, and UV rays. And, most importantly, moisturize as your life depends on it.
